XML

XML is often touted as the solution to fix every database problem. It is not. However, it is useful is solving two very specific problems:

1. In allowing dissimilar database systems to communicate and share data; and
2. In allowing client-side manipulation of data-sets, without having to pull the data from the server again for each manipulation.

Alliance Software has a great deal of experience with using XML in both ways. In our work with RISS, we designed a specification that allows hundreds of databases that were designed for unique purposes to communicate and share data. We have also used XML to create live stats feeds for web sites.
